What is the Kickstart Scheme?

The Kickstart Scheme is a Government led and backed £2 billion initiative designed to create job placements for 16 to 24-year-olds.

The scheme provides funding to create new job placements and employers of all sizes can apply for the funding.

The funding covers:

  • 100% of the National Minimum Wage for 25 hours per week for a total of 6 months

  • Employer National Insurance contributions

  • Employer minimum automatic enrolment contributions

For every placement created and filled, employers will receive £1,500 funding to help towards setup costs and to support the young worker to develop their employability skills.

The scheme has been designed to create new roles that would not have existed otherwise and is not intended to replace existing or planned roles.

Applications for the Kickstart Scheme can be submitted until 31st December 2021.

Who is eligible for the Kickstart Scheme?

Employers across all industries and of all sizes can apply for the funding. Some of the UK's largest employers have already started participating in the scheme as well as thousands of SMEs.

There are no limitations to the number of job placements each company can make. Whether it's 1 worker required or 100, the Kickstart Scheme is made to support all businesses with their hiring requirements.

Kickstart Scheme criteria

There are some core requirements to ensure employers are eligible to take part in the Kickstart Scheme. The job placements created must:

  • be new jobs and must not replace existing or planned jobs

  • not cause existing employees, apprentices, or contractors to lose work or reduce their working hours

  • offer a minimum of 25 hours per week for 6 months

  • only require basic training

For each job placement, you must help the young person become more employable. This could include:

  • looking for long-term work, including career advice and setting goals

  • supporting them with their CV and interview knowledge and preparations

  • developing their skills in the workplace
